Knysna Yacht Club
Newsletter - August 2013
Commodore’s Corner
Jim Parkes

The month of August lived up to its reputation for stormy weather bringing gale force winds and heavy rain, which regrettably caused the Opening Cruise to be cancelled. However, we can look forward to a full calendar of events for the new sailing season. The 2013/2014 KYC Calendar of Events booklet is now available and will be posted out to members during September. The detailed Sailing & Social Calendar can also be accessed on the KYC website: www.knysnayachtclub.com/sailing-calendar. So read all about it, plan ahead and make the most of your club's facilities in the glorious Spring weather.

Georgou Divaris CONGRATULATIONS to Georgou Divaris, for winning Gold at the RS Tera World Championships!
As reported in the most recent Gybeset Newsletter, Georgou was among the medal winners who were recognised by the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Mr Fikile Mbalula, at a glittering gala dinner in Cape Town on 31st August.

According to the report by Peter Hall, South African Sailing National Councillor and Western Cape Dinghy Chairman, "sailing was recognized together with the World Championship achievements of the 7's Rugby, Rowing, Swimming and Deaflympics, with the gold medal winners being awarded R10,000, silver medal winners R7,000 and bronze winners receiving R5,000.

In a rousing address, the Minister expressed his enthusiasm for excellence within sport ("we do not roll out the red carpet for mediocrity, we roll out the red carpet for excellence") and congratulated all the award winners for being role models and an inspiration to fellow South Africans. Sailing was high on the agenda - "it is not just rugby, cricket and soccer - there is sailing, swimming and rowing too!" The Minister also mentioned the importance of "make sailing fashionable" (Really good news!!)

It is wonderful to see the hard work and commitment of our award winners being recognized at this level and we hope that this will serve as additional motivation for all sailors to achieve results at the highest level for South Africa."

The following sailors were recognized:
   •  Ryan & Michaela Robinson - Mirror Worlds - Gold
   •  Allan & Daniel Lawrence - Hobie Tiger Worlds - Silver
   •  Blaine & Peter Dodds - Hobie Tiger Worlds - Bronze
   •  Georgiou Divaris - RS Tera Worlds (Sport) - Gold
   •  Sam Lombard - RS Tera (Pro Fleet) - Silver
   •  James Hellstrom - RS Tera (Pro Fleet) - Bronze
   •  Brandon Wijtenburg & Todd Fisher - Hobie Dragoon Worlds - Silver

Boat parking: If you have a Dinghy, Tender; Canoe or Trailer in the boat park or the trailer park, the Sailing Committee needs your kind assistance to update the boat parking records at the Club. You can help by contacting Rob Clark in the office as soon as possible by telephone on 044 382 5724 or by email kyc@kingsley.co.za. You need to provide him with the KYC boat number, the type of craft or trailer, where it is currently parked and your contact details. It would be preferable that you complete a Boat Parking Application Form, which is available as a download from the KYC web site www.knysnayachtclub.com or can be obtained from the KYC Office. Presentation from the RS Tera World Championship Sailors
Wanga Mbabe On the afternoon of 31st August, despite bad weather, a good crowd gathered to hear Wanga Mbabe and Georgou Divaris give feedback on their amazing experiences at the RS Tera Worlds in Weymouth. Unfortunately, Bhekumuzi Hani was unable to be there for family reasons. However, the two sailors did a great job as could be gauged from the audience response. The presentation included travelling by air to the UK, the venue, preparation, practice, the opening ceremony, sailing with the world's top 50, fun time, making new friends, the closing ceremony and their visit to London.

In conclusion, Wanga extended special thanks to the KYC Gencom for arranging the Weymouth fundraising campaign and also to the Knysna Municipality, the Rotary club, members of the club and non-members who donated different valuable things such as money to pay for the trip, and sailing gear, with particular thanks to Andrew Finn for all his support and to Mike Pogodin for looking after them. He concluded by saying "Without all this support we wouldn't have been there."

The presentation will be available on the KYC website soon.

August has seen the K2's out in force as paddlers prepare for the two big Cape events, the Breede and the Hansa Fish River canoe marathons.

There were two Breede pre-races as usual. Zac Isaac and Danie Van Zyl teamed up to enter the first one, which was raced from Drew to Swellendam on a full and freezing river.

Last Saturday Hubby Sandberg and the mixed pairing of Rory Sandberg and Jess Wienand tackled the race from Robertson to Bonnievale. Most paddlers who are used to the normal flow of 30-50 cumecshad to contend with a Breede flowing at around 600 cumecs. This made for a very fast race with the first 31 canoes all breaking the record. Rory and Jess recorded their TOP SPEED AT 27KM//H!!! Well done to Hubby and his partner, Andre Rabie, who finished 2nd in their age group.

Breede and the Hansa Fish River canoe marathons 20km George Dam race

Knysna canoeists also took part in the 20km George Dam race earlier in the month. Early morning bad weather unfortunately put some paddlers off but it warmed up nicely later on and everyone enjoyed the event. The Knysna paddlers' results are as follows.
   •  1st - Paul Dugmore/ Norman Frost
   •  2nd - Hubby Sandberg/John Stanwix
   •  4th - Trevor/Jenny Niksch
   •  5th - Rory Sandberg/Jess Wienand

Good luck to everyone racing over the next month!
