Knysna Yacht Club
Newsletter - February 2014
Commodore's Corner

February is known for being the month when people quieten down after the festive season, get back to serious work and take stock of the year ahead. However, I am pleased to say that the Club has continued to be busy particularly for lunches and dinners on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The main event of the month was the successful staging of the KYC Interclub Regatta. It was great to see the place buzzing with activity. There was a wonderful atmosphere with families camping in the boat park, children jumping in the water, plenty of activity around the braai area and lots of young people generally having fun, not to mention all the sailing action on the lagoon. Congratulations to Andrew Finn and his team on a job well done!

I would like to thank Joop Weddepohl for his generous donation of a beautiful model cutter-rigged cruising yacht, which will be on display in the main clubhouse very soon. It will add to the new look of the club, which is looking very smart, thanks to the perseverance of Albert Lombaard.

Friday Night Lucky Draw Winner of R1050 was Mr J Neuwerth on 28th Feb. Good start to the year!

THE KYC INTERCLUB REGATTA, which took place on the Knysna Lagoon over the weekend of 15/16 March, was most enjoyable and successful event, well supported by the local clubs (Mossel Bay and George Lakes) in large numbers, with smaller contingents coming from Port Elizabeth (Redhouse and Algoa Bay Yacht Clubs). The fleet of 60 boats made a wonderful spectacle out on the water. In the senior fleet there was a wide variety of craft racing together, but the Lasers were in the majority. Catamarans had a separate start - they had Darts, Hobie 16's and Hobie 14's. The junior fleet consisted of Optimists, RS Tera, Mirror and one of each of Dabchick and Topper.

Four races were sailed on Saturday in a light South Easterly wind. The fleet had to contend with the incoming tide and most chose to short tack up the sand banks to avoid the current when going upwind. The senior fleet in these races was generally led by the GLYC Fireball of David Laing & Mark Dee, chased by the Finn of KYC's David Shilton and RYC's Sonnet, sailed by Stephen du Toit and Sarah Arnold. The junior fleet was led by KYC's RS Tera Pros, sailed by Sanele Magqaza and Aphendule Manelii, with the RS Tera Sports of Robyn Hellstrom (GLYC) and RYC's Sophie Hynch not far behind.

On Sunday, it was spring low tide at the scheduled start time, with not much water in the channels. To cater for this, a long haul race was set. The start was from the club house, and the senior fleet had to round a mark near the Knysna Heads, then return to finish at the yacht club. The junior fleet's rounding mark was closer - just past Thesen Island. Then, with the incoming tide, there was sufficient water to set normal races in the channels. Three further races were set in the moderate South Easter.

The prize giving ceremony was held just after the sailing had been completed. The winner of the KYC Interclub Trophy in the senior fleet was Mossel Bay Yacht & Boat Club, ahead of KYC. This is MBYBC's first win in this category. The junior inter club competition was won by George Lakes Yacht Club, ahead of KYC.

In the individual categories, the overall winner in the senior fleet was the Sonnet of Stephen du Toit and Sarah Arnold, with David Shilton (Finn) second and John Marc Olivier (Laser Radial) in third place. In the junior fleet, first place went to Robyn Hellstrom, with Sanele Magqaza in 2nd place, Sophie Hynch 3rd, all seen in photos below.

The Juenger's sailed into Knysna on their Halberg Rassy 34 "Susanna" for a short stop over last November. Subsequently they have fallen in love with our town and club and have taken out temporary membership.

They have kindly donated a used mainsail, which will work handsomely with the KYC sail training vessel "Restless"
