(More details under Inshore Sailing)

CONGRATULATIONS to Wanga Mbabe for winning a Bronze medal at the South Eastern Cape Regional Championships.
It is wonderfully encouraging that our junior sailors are performing very well so early in the sailing season. They have laid down the challenge to all KYC sailors to get out on the water and use their sailing skills and techniques to reach the top of the score board. The sailing calendar is designed to give maximum opportunity to compete and to improve. So we call on all sailors to get out there and sail!

Spectators are also most important because they help to cheer the sailors to greater heights. So please come along give them and your club support while you dine in the restaurant or sip on your drink.

New Members Evening New Members´ Evening is on Wednesday, 2nd October, during Happy Hour. Please come make our new members feel welcome.
The Spring Party The Spring Party is the occasion to celebrate the arrival of new beginnings and brighter days. So put on your party clothes and dancing shoes and have some fun to the music of Cloud Nine on Saturday 5th October from 5pm to 10pm.

Membership Cards and Car Stickers together with the KYC Calendar of Events have been mailed in the past month to all those members who have paid their subscriptions. The South Eastern Cape Regional Sailing Championships and the Finn Class National Championships were held at Mossel Bay Yacht & Boat Club from Saturday 21st to Tuesday 24 September 2013. There were 57 competitors in the Regionals in 7 boat classes and 15 entries in the Finn Nationals; representing 11 clubs including some from as far afield as Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Richards Bay.

The regatta was divided into two courses. Course 1 included the Catamarans and the Open class, while Course 2 included the Finn Nationals, RS Tera Pros & Sports; Dabchicks, and Optimists.

The weather conditions were very challenging for the full four days. On Day 1 the wind speed ranged between 20 and 30 knots so only 2 races were sailed. On day 2 conditions were better allowing 4 races but the start had to be delayed due to very light winds initially. On day 3 again strong winds prevailed and only 1 race was sailed. On day 4 there was a lull in the wind at first followed by high winds of up to 30kts again.

KYC was represented by 10 sailors overall; 4 in the RS Tera Pro class; 2 in the RS Tera Sport class; 1 in the Open class sailing a Laser, and 3 in the Finn Nationals. KYC's best performer was Wanga Mbabe who won the bronze medal in the RS Tera Pro class. Congratulations to Wanga and well done to all the KYC participants.

The Finn Nationals was highly competitive and was won by Olympic Gold Medallist, Gareth Blackenberg, followed by Greg Davis, with Paul Allardice in 3rd place. KYC sailors were Dudley Isaac, Rob Clark and Alastair Fraser. According to Rob Clark, the conditions were very demanding because of the shifty winds but also very exhilarating. He complimented the organisers for coping under difficult circumstances. He also expressed sincere appreciation to Greg Davis who provided and rigged five boats for the event, three of which were those sailed by the KYC competitors. Thanks Greg for this act of good sportsmanship.

The regatta was well organised by MBYBC with assistance from KYC and ABYC on the Race and rescue aspects. It was a complicated event because of the range of classes, which involved providing separate committee boats, finish lines and rescue crew both courses. But all went according to plan.

The venue was very good and there was a friendly atmosphere generally. The turnout was lower than in 2012 but this was mainly due to date clashes with other national sailing events such as the Laser Nationals and the 420 high performance training course.

Junior Sailor, Georgou Divaris JUNIOR SAILOR, GEORGOU DIVARIS, at the age of 13, is once again a Gold Medallist, this time by winning the 2013 Laser 4.7 SA National Championships, held from 21st to 24th September, on the Vaal Dam. Of the 12 races sailed over the four days, Georgou was placed 1st in 5, 2nd in 4 and 3rd in 2, one of which he could discard.

This young sailor has had a very busy and very remarkable year. Besides the Laser 4.7 Champs, he has competed in the Optimist Worlds in Italy; RS Tera Worlds in UK; where he won Gold, and the African Optimist Champs, where he achieved Bronze. Georgou, who lives in Sedgefield, is a member of the Knysna Yacht Club and the George Lakes Yacht Club.
Gold Medallist, Philip Bendon Another Gold Medallist, started sailing at Knysna Yacht Club, is Philip Bendon, the Team Ireland Skipper who, won the The Match Race Youth European Championship 2013 last week, which were held at Lake Constance in Switzerland from 24-28 September.

The regulation boat for the Bodensee Match Race Series and the European Youth Championship was the "blu26" boat Congratulations Philip. We are proud of you too! http://europeanchampionship.matchrace-bodensee.com/informationen/die-boote-blu26/

The Founders Trophy was sailed over the first weekend of September. The weather was marginal but 3 races were sailed. There were 22 entries overall, 10 in the open fleet, 6 juniors and 6 keelboats. Siyabulela Msindo was the winner of the open fleet, followed by David Shilton (Finn) and Mzukisi Manyati (Laser) 3rd. In the junior fleet, Maggaza Sanele (RS Tera Pro) was 1st; Bhekumuzi Hani (RS Tera Pro) 2nd and Maneli Aphendule 3rd. Brett Gething (L26) won in the keelboat fleet, John Young (L26) 2nd and Patrick Wilson (Infinity) was 3rd.

The Active Cup for keelboats is off to a good start with 2 rounds having been sailed to date. Brett Gething (L26 Knysna Challenger) continues his form from last season with two convincing wins with John Young (L26) finishing second in each case. Newcomer, Jamie Bacon (Flamenca) has shown good form in his debut races and should be a strong contender for the future.
